Description

Very little is known about Gozamata. She is one of the more powerful ancient Dragons, beings created by powerful mages in days long gone, using magic we no longer have. She is mentioned in several old epics, but disappeared from history for more than a thousand years, until she reappeared a couple centuries ago, in very mysterious circumstances, as Guardian of the Ricohedron. Defeating her will be a formidable challenge.

Advice: The Riconists were able to control Gozamata and force her to do their bidding, which was to protect Riconist treasures including the Ricohedron. It's uncertain, but the Riconists may have left some written information behind on how to defeat her.

In-depth analysis: Historical accounts typically describe dragons as reptilian creatures. They tend to be very large and serpentine, usually have legs, sometimes wings. Their heads are shaped like something between the head of a horse and a crocodile. They have very sharp teeth and scales that are impervious to all but the most powerful magical attacks. Very often they are said to breathe fire. Such is invariably how dragons are depicted in literature, including the popular story Oracle of the Night, which largely codified the concept of a dragon to today's culture (albeit in a much friendlier form).

However, modern analysis rejects these accounts as inaccurate. Apart from having a serpentine shape, these attributes cannot be said to be generally true of actual dragons.

Dragons aren't actually a species. They are individual creations by very powerful mages that predate written history, using magic no longer known to us. Not much is known of them, but most of them have a strong affinity for treasures: gemstones, precious metal, and so on. For this reason it is speculated that the great lords of yore commissioned the creation of dragons to protect their wealth.

Each mage who created a dragon did it differently: the dragons we know of are highly varied. Serpentine shape is the only consistent feature of a dragon. (This makes a certain amount of sense: dragon-making almost certainly invokes some diabolical power, which of course would tend to favor serpentine shapes.) Their size can vary from smaller than a human to more than 100 feet in length. Reptilian skin and hard scales are common, but far from universal. In fact, there are actually more known pescine dragons than reptilian. Details of the dragons' appearance are highly variable. Many have the features that resemble specific animals. Others have features that are highly warped compared to what natural living things look like. There are quite a few dragons that look like machines, a few that are tree-like, and a few that are just featureless worms. There are no dragons known to breathe fire.

What does this mean for the hero? Unfortunately, it means that there are almost no guarantees. Every dragon is different, and it is up to the hero to figure out and exploit their weaknesses. One silver lining: experts universally agree that all dragons do have a significant weakness.
